Non-Marking Forklift Tires: What They Actually Are, When You Need Them, and What They Cost You

Most buyers order non-marking tires the same way they order a fan belt: they say the words, they get a part, and they find out later whether it was the right one. It is one of the few forklift decisions where the wrong choice does not show up as a breakdown. It shows up as black streaks across a floor someone is paying to keep clean, or as an operator getting a shock every time they step off the truck.

Here is what the compound actually is, where it belongs, and what it genuinely costs you in wear and safety.

What are non-marking forklift tires?

Non-marking forklift tires are tires compounded with silica in place of carbon black, so they do not leave dark streaks when they scuff or pivot on a finished floor. Everything else about the tire, its size, its construction and its load rating, stays the same.

Carbon black is what makes a standard tire black, and it is also what transfers onto concrete when rubber drags under load. Swap it for a lighter mineral filler and the streaking stops. Tire manufacturers describe the change as a filler substitution rather than a redesign, and Camso, which builds non-marking versions across its material handling range, explains that these compounds use silica as the reinforcing filler instead of carbon black.

That single substitution is the whole product. It is not a different shape, it does not mount differently, and it does not change how the tire is pressed onto a wheel. What it does change is wear behaviour, static conductivity and price, which is where most of the confusion starts.

Why are non-marking forklift tires grey instead of white?

Non-marking describes what the tire leaves behind, not what colour it is. Most current non-marking rubber is grey because a very small stabilising fraction of carbon black improves durability without producing floor marks.

White was the original approach and it had problems. Reaching a true white shade meant heavier chemical processing, and the result faded and yellowed under heat and dust. Camso moved to a grey natural rubber compound in 2006 for exactly that reason, noting that adding roughly 0.1 percent carbon black stabilises the rubber while keeping the tire non-marking.

The practical takeaway for a buyer is simple. Do not judge the compound by how pale the tire looks. Grey is now the norm, and a white tire is not automatically the cleaner option.

Is non-marking a tire type or a rubber compound?

It is a compound, not a construction. The same non-marking rubber is offered across cushion press-on, polyurethane press-on and solid resilient lines, so you still have to choose the construction separately.

This is the single most common ordering mistake we deal with over the phone. Someone calls and asks for non-marking tires for a 5,000 lb lift, and that request on its own does not identify a part. Cushion press-ons, solid resilient pneumatics and polyurethane press-ons are three different builds with three different mounting requirements, and manufacturers such as Camso produce non-marking versions across all of those product families. Compound answers one question. Construction answers a different one.

The fastest way to close the gap is the machine’s own plate. Before quoting anything we ask for the tire size printed on it, because reading a forklift data plate tells you the construction the truck was built around, and fitting a different one changes ride height and stability.

Which floors and facilities actually require non-marking tires?

Non-marking tires belong where floor appearance or contamination control is audited by somebody, not simply wherever a forklift happens to work indoors. A plain warehouse slab does not need them.

The environments where the requirement is real are the ones with an inspection attached: food and beverage production, pharmaceutical and clean manufacturing, hospitals, airports, retail sales floors, exhibition halls and grocery back-of-house. Camso lists airports, hospitals, grocery stores and trade show floors among the settings where cleanliness and hygiene take priority.

In our experience the requirement almost never comes from the operator. It comes from a third party. A food safety auditor writes it up, a landlord objects to marks on an epoxy coating, or a customer walks the plant and asks why the floor looks scuffed. By the time we get the call the decision has already been made for the customer, and what they need from us is the right size and construction, quickly.

Worth noting: if you are running combustion trucks indoors on a floor that clean, the tires are usually not your biggest problem. Ventilation is. That trade-off is covered in our comparison of electric and propane forklifts for indoor work.

Do non-marking forklift tires wear out faster?

Published wear penalties for non-marking rubber range from roughly 25 percent to double the replacement rate, and almost none of those figures cite a source. Duty cycle and heat drive the difference far more than the compound does.

Look across the industry pages making this claim and the numbers do not agree with each other. One dealer site says 25 percent shorter life, another says twice as fast, a third says only that they wear faster and gives no figure at all. Manufacturers push back on the premise entirely. Camso’s position is that a properly built non-marking compound should not compromise performance, and that the real failure risk in demanding applications is thermal: medium and high-intensity duty cycles reduce cooldown time between runs, and overlooking thermal capability leads to thermal failure of non-marking tires.

That matches what comes back through our yard. The non-marking sets that fail early are almost never failing because of the compound. They fail because the truck was spec’d for a light indoor duty and ended up running long shifts, crossing dock plates, and pivoting under near-capacity loads on a hot floor. Put a black tire on that same truck and it would also wear hard, just less visibly. Meanwhile the non-marking cushions on a low-hour electric doing three pallets an hour in a cold room will outlast the buyer’s patience with the machine.

Why does a forklift on non-marking tires shock the operator?

Silica is an insulator, so a truck on non-marking tires stores static charge instead of bleeding it into the floor. The charge releases into whatever conductive thing touches the machine next, which is usually a person.

Carbon black conducts. That is why a standard black tire quietly grounds a forklift all day without anyone thinking about it. Replace the filler with silica and that path disappears. The voltages involved are not trivial: Camso reports that static build-up in non-marking tires can reach up to 50,000 volts, with the potential for shocks, fires and damage to facility equipment.

The strap is a mitigation, not a fix. Drag chains and grounding straps work only while they are clean and actually touching the floor. In the field they cake with dust, wear short, or get torn off on a dock plate and nobody notices for weeks. If you rely on them, they belong on the daily walkaround, not on a quarterly PM sheet. Two straps per truck, one behind each axle, buys you redundancy for very little money.

The engineered alternative is a non-marking anti-static compound, sold under designations like NMAS, which restores conductivity without restoring the marks. It costs more per tire. Against a facility where a discharge can reach sensitive equipment, or against the cost of replacing a burned-out controller, the maths usually favours it. Static that finds its way into truck electronics is one of the quieter contributors to the electrical faults behind forklift battery and electrical system failures.

Do non-marking tires make a forklift safe for a hazardous location?

No. Tire compound has no bearing on hazardous location approval. That is governed by the truck’s designation and by how the area itself has been classified.

This is where the anti-static conversation gets dangerous, because “anti-static” and “approved for a classified area” sound related and are not. Under the federal standard for powered industrial trucks there are eleven separate truck designations, D, DS, DY, E, ES, EE, EX, G, GS, LP and LPS, and the standard requires the atmosphere or location to be classified as hazardous or non-hazardous before anyone considers which truck type is permitted there. It also states plainly that only approved trucks may be used in hazardous locations.

Nothing in that framework mentions tire colour or filler. A grey non-marking tire on an E-designated electric truck does not turn it into an EE or an EX unit. If your facility has a classified area, the designation on the truck is the control, and the tire is a separate decision made underneath it.

We raise this because the assumption turns up more often than it should. A buyer hears that non-marking anti-static tires prevent sparking, concludes the machine is now cleared for a flammable atmosphere, and stops asking questions. It is not, and the plate on the truck will tell you what it is actually rated for.

What does OSHA require when you change tire compound?

Replacement parts must be equivalent as to safety with the parts used in the original design, and the truck has to be examined before it goes into service at least once a day.

Two provisions of the powered industrial truck standard apply directly to a tire change. The first requires that any part requiring replacement be replaced only by parts equivalent as to safety with those used in the original design. The second requires examination before the truck is placed in service, at least daily, and after each shift where trucks run round the clock, with defects reported and corrected immediately. A truck found defective or unsafe has to come out of service until it is restored.

In practice that means three things. Match the size and load rating exactly rather than fitting whatever non-marking set is in stock. Do not mix compounds across an axle. And put the tires on the daily check, alongside the strap if you are running one.

Getting the rating wrong is not a paperwork issue. Tire diameter affects ride height and the effective load centre, which is the same geometry that governs how much weight a forklift can safely carry at a given height.

How do you tell if a used forklift already has non-marking tires?

Check the sidewall stamp and the data plate together. Colour on its own is unreliable, because grey rubber darkens under dust and black rubber can look grey under a film of concrete powder.

The order we use when a trade-in comes onto the lot is straightforward. Wipe a clean patch on the sidewall first, because that is where the compound marking and the size are moulded in, and a wipe settles most cases in ten seconds. If the stamp is worn off, check the tread face where the rubber is freshest and least contaminated rather than the shoulder. Then look at the floor behind the machine after a hard pivot, which is the only test that answers the question the buyer actually cares about.

Two things that trip people up. A used truck can arrive with mismatched compounds, black on the drive and non-marking on the steer, because somebody replaced one axle cheaply. And a truck sold as “indoor use” is not necessarily on non-marking rubber, since plenty of clean warehouses never cared about marks. Neither is a defect, but both change what you are buying.

Frequently asked questions

Can you mix non-marking and black tires on the same forklift?

You can physically, but it defeats the purpose, because the black tires will still streak the floor. Keep the compound consistent across both axles, and never mix compounds on the same axle where uneven wear affects handling.

Do non-marking tires have less traction?

On the smooth sealed floors they are designed for, the difference is negligible and most operators never notice it. Traction complaints usually trace back to a wet floor or a worn tread face rather than to the compound itself.

Do non-marking tires leave any residue at all?

They do not leave the dark streaks carbon black produces, but every rubber tire sheds some material as it wears. What you get is fine light-coloured dust that sweeps up, instead of scuff marks that need scrubbing.

Can non-marking tires be used outdoors?

They can, but they stop being non-marking the moment they pick up grit, oil or asphalt residue and carry it back inside. If a truck spends real time in the yard, the cleaner fix is a second machine or a wash-down routine at the door.

The short version

Non-marking is a filler swap, not a tire type. Decide the construction from the machine’s plate first, then decide the compound based on whether anyone is actually auditing your floor. If nobody is, you are paying a premium for nothing.

Where the compound is genuinely required, budget for two things the brochures underplay. Static needs handling, either with straps you inspect daily or with an anti-static compound that costs more upfront and less in aggravation. And the replacement set has to match the original rating exactly, because the standard treats a tire as a safety-relevant part, not a consumable you can approximate.

Get the size off the plate before you call anyone for a quote. It turns a twenty minute conversation into a two minute one, and it is the single thing that most often stops the wrong set arriving on a pallet.
